Filey Brigg in the 4th Century

The first recorded man made development on Filey Brigg appears to be that of the Roman Signal Station which was built in the fourth century AD during the final days of the Roman occupation of Britain. The signal station was excavated in 1857 by local antiquarian Dr Cortis (M.D.) and his associates. Five Foundation stones were recovered which are now displayed in Crescent Gardens, Filey

Dr Cortis gave a lecture to Filey's antiquarians and local worthies in November 1857, the full text of which can be found below. If Dr Curtis is to be believed, Filey had a central role as a Roman Naval base. His comments may be fanciful and remain unsubstantiated but must certainly have impressed the target audience.
